A closer look at the story

The Novices is a French comedy-drama that tells, with humour, how the paths of two very different women cross. Sister Agnès, a novice nun, flees her convent in Brittany and comes to Paris. Looking for somewhere to shelter in the big city, the young woman unexpectedly ends up staying with a prostitute named Mona Lisa. Agnès faces a big problem, however: she has no skills or work experience whatsoever, and finding a job turns out to be much harder than she imagined. Seeing the young novice's predicament, Mona Lisa decides to teach her the tricks of her own trade, the oldest profession in the world. Directed by Guy Casaril, who wrote the film with Paul Gégauff, this 91-minute 1970 film stars Brigitte Bardot as Agnès and Annie Girardot as Mona Lisa.
