A closer look at the story

Everyone knows the name of Commissioner Gordon, a sworn foe of the underworld and a man whose name has become a byword for law and order. But how did James Gordon, once a rookie detective, get there? Gotham goes back to the years before Batman appeared in search of the answer. Grappling with the many-layered web of corruption that secretly controls the city, the young Gordon also witnesses the early steps of the journey that will one day turn young Bruce Wayne into Batman. In the city that gave birth to the world's most famous villains, the series also reveals the early days of legendary figures such as Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, Poison Ivy and the Joker, and the circumstances that transformed them. Bruno Heller's gritty police saga premiered on FOX in 2014 and ran for five seasons, 100 episodes in all, with Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz and Robin Lord Taylor heading the cast.
