A closer look at the story

Tired of losing their harvest to bandit raids, a group of farmers decide to find warriors who will defend their village. All they can offer is food, yet the seasoned samurai Kambei agrees to help and sets about recruiting six more fighters. Among them is Kikuchiyo, loud, reckless and harder to place than the rest. Together the seven turn the village into a defensive position and try to teach its people how to stand up for themselves. Directed by Akira Kurosawa, who wrote it with Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni, the 207-minute 1954 film stars Toshirō Mifune and Takashi Shimura in an epic about courage, class and solidarity.
