Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, directed by Greta Gerwig, brings to the screen the story of how Narnia came to be in C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia. Gerwig turning to a large-scale fantasy universe with this project puts the film among the most anticipated.
The story
The film follows two children who discover doors to other worlds in a wood full of pools. One of the pools takes them to an empty city beneath a fading sun; there they rouse a queen responsible for wiping out her own people and, without realising it, take her back to London. The story explains how the world known in the series began.
Cast and crew
The cast includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds. The film is adventure, family and fantasy.
Why it matters
The series has been adapted many times over the years, but The Magician’s Nephew offers a new starting point. How Gerwig’s character-driven storytelling carries over to this universe is the film’s most curious aspect. The film opens in cinemas first (February 12, 2027, with premium previews on February 10) and reaches Netflix on April 2, 2027; the first trailer came out on October 13.
