A closer look at the story

Child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe's life was shaken years ago by an unexpected attack. His new patient is a young boy, Cole Sear, who is keeping a dark secret: he sees the spirits of dead people who have not found peace, and they speak to him. Unable to understand what is happening to him, Cole lives in constant fear. Crowe becomes not only the one person Cole shares his secret with, but also his companion on a difficult journey to help him, one on which both of them confront the emptiness inside themselves. M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed this 107-minute 1999 film, which stars Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette and Olivia Williams in a chilling psychological thriller.
