Eyes Wide Shut: A confession that opens a dark door

A closer look at the story

From the outside, the marriage of Bill Harford, a successful doctor, and his wife Alice looks flawless. After a lavish party, though, a confession from Alice shakes every belief Bill held about that perfection: she tells him of the desire she once felt for a man she met. Rattled by jealousy and curiosity, Bill finds himself on a night-long journey full of strange encounters. It leads him all the way to a mysterious gathering organised by a secret underground society, and he soon realises that the world he has stepped into is far too dangerous for him. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and adapted by Kubrick and Frederic Raphael from Arthur Schnitzler's work, the 159-minute 1999 film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in an enigmatic psychological drama.
