Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Erasing a love from memory
A closer look at the story
Joel Barish receives startling news about Clementine, the woman he has been with for two years: using an experimental procedure, she has had every trace of their relationship wiped from her memory and no longer even knows who he is. Hurt and angry, Joel decides to undergo the same treatment. But as his memories are deleted one by one, he relives their relationship from the end back to the beginning, and when the happy moments come round he realises he still loves Clementine and begins a race against time not to lose her. Directed by Michel Gondry from a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, the 108-minute 2004 film stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst and Mark Ruffalo in an inventive romantic science-fiction story.
