A closer look at the story

Wealthy, handsome businessman Edward Lewis has grown tired of the monotony of his life and the relationships around him. One night he meets Vivian Ward by chance, a cheerful, lively woman who makes her living on the street. Their meeting leads to a deal that will last seven days: Vivian will accompany Edward for a week, and at the end of it each will go back to their own world. Over a week of luxury hotels and elegant clothes, Vivian's warm, spirited nature shakes up Edward's calculating approach to life. As they unknowingly teach each other a great deal, they find themselves caught between the gulf that separates them and the feelings that are growing. Directed by Garry Marshall and written by J.F. Lawton, the 120-minute 1990 film stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in a classic romantic comedy.
