Amélie

A closer look at the story

Amélie works as a waitress in a little Paris café, a young woman with a vivid imagination and a deep streak of shyness. One day she discovers an old box hidden in her flat and resolves to return it to its owner without revealing herself. That small act gives her a taste for secretly improving the lives of the people around her. Yet for someone so inventive at helping others, she finds it remarkably hard to be brave when a mysterious young man crosses her own path. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who wrote it with Guillaume Laurant, the 2001 film stars Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz in a colourful, playful romantic comedy.
