A closer look at the story
Dűne is an experimental animated short of about four minutes, written and directed by the Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Ulrich. Rather than telling a conventional story, it treats sounds as witnesses; over its brief running time they blur into memories and half-waking dreams, leaving the viewer unsure whether what is heard actually happened. Moving back and forth between imagination and reality, the film builds its sense of mystery and unease through atmosphere instead of words. Released in 2020, it is unrelated to the 1984 and 2021 science-fiction films with which it shares a name, and stands as an independent, personal short.
