The Last Samurai: Between honour and modernisation

KINONOOK / EN

A closer look at the story

In 1870s Japan, Captain Nathan Algren of the American army travels east at the invitation of the Japanese Emperor to train the country's first modern army. In this feudal land rushing to modernise, the traditional life of the samurai still endures. When Algren has an accident and is saved by the samurai leader Katsumoto, he gets the chance to know this ancient culture from the inside, and comes to respect ever more deeply the code of honour that governs them. Yet he is expected to wipe out the samurai's traditions for the sake of modernisation and open trade. Caught between two worlds, Algren must eventually make a momentous decision. Directed by Edward Zwick, the 154-minute 2003 film stars Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, Timothy Spall and Hiroyuki Sanada in an epic war drama.
