A closer look at the story

In the near future, Theodore Twombly is a lonely man who earns his living writing heartfelt personal letters on other people's behalf. Since separating from his wife he has been living alone in his apartment, his days blurring into one another. One day he buys a newly developed artificial-intelligence operating system designed to meet its user's every need. Samantha, the voice of the system, opens Theodore up to a different way of seeing life through her questions about the world, and an unexpected romance begins to blossom between them. Written and directed by Spike Jonze, the 126-minute 2013 film pairs Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore with Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha in a romantic science-fiction story that asks questions about love and technology.
