The box-office scorecard for summer 2026 paints a mixed picture for studios. Pixar’s Toy Story 5 made the year’s biggest opening and topped the chart, while two big films fell short of expectations. Here is the summary of the season.

Toy Story 5

The film broke the series’ opening record with $160 million from 4,425 theaters, the year’s biggest opening at the time. By its second weekend its worldwide total had reached $585 million; the second weekend itself was $70 million and the domestic total about $297 million.

Supergirl

Warner Bros.’ Supergirl opened to about $38 million, below forecasts of $40–50 million. The worldwide opening stayed at $68 million. With a net production budget of $170 to $186 million, the result was judged a disappointment for the studio.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

Disney’s Star Wars film reached about $175 million domestically and over $320 million worldwide in its first six weekends. Against a cost of about $165 million, those figures fell short of expectations.

The overall picture

Despite these misses, the domestic box office year to date is $4.7 billion, 15 percent higher than 2025. So the industry as a whole is having a healthy year; only some big-budget films did not land.
