Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has grown one of the year’s biggest box-office successes even bigger. The film has reached about $1.8 billion worldwide, both the highest figure of Nolan’s career and the title of Universal’s biggest film of all time.

The numbers

Depending on the source the worldwide total ranges from $1.79 to $1.82 billion. About $625 million of that comes from the US and about $1.17 to $1.19 billion from international markets. The film reached this figure over a 104-day run. On its opening weekend it earned about $124.5 million in the US and $139.6 million across 73 international markets, $264 million worldwide, a record opening for Nolan.

The records

The film passed Universal’s 2015 release Jurassic World to become the studio’s highest-grossing film and is recorded as the highest-grossing R-rated release of all time. Given a production budget of about $250 million and roughly $125 million in marketing, the film is by a wide margin profitable for the studio.

Story and expectations

The film adapts Homer’s epic and carries Nolan’s large-scale storytelling to history and myth. After the box-office success it is also named the main favourite in awards-season forecasts.
