Match Game: Filling in the blanks with celebrities

KINONOOK / EN

A closer look at the story

Match Game is a classic American game show in which two contestants test their wits and powers of prediction against a panel of celebrities. The basic idea is simple but great fun: contestants are given a sentence with a word missing, and their goal is to come up with the same word as the famous panellists. The more celebrities they match, the better their chances of winning. That means the players try to guess not just a correct answer but the answer most likely to pop into the panellists' heads. The stars' witty remarks and surprising responses turn the programme into a laugh-filled spectacle. Gene Rayburn served as host, while names such as Richard Dawson, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly and Fannie Flagg were regular panellists. Mark Goodson created the programme, which premiered on CBS in 1973 and ran for 1,438 episodes.
